Election: Aggrieved Alumni Members Drag Colleagues To Court Over Alleged Irregularities

By Blessing Agboola

Some aggrieved members of the Alumni Association of the Federal Government College, IdoAni (FGCID), have dragged the Association, Chairman and members of the electoral committee of the Association for 2020 elections before a Federal High Court, Akure Division over alleged violation of their voting rights.

Joined in the suit are president, chairman and members of the Board of Trustees to the association.

The aggrieved members alleged that the process for the forthcoming election was manipulated in favour of some sets against some other sets as against the universal adult suffrage voting system of one man, one vote.

In a class action that was instituted by Engr. Akinola Ifelola and Mr. Nnaemeka Amadi suing on behalf of themselves and section of the FGCID platinum 98 set through their Counsel, Adeyemi Adewumi Esq in Suit No FHC/AK/CS/64/2020 filed on the 31st day of August, 2020, the plaintiffs sought a declaration that the purported weighted votes skewed in favour of some sets by the electoral committee vide the Electoral College Model for 2020 elections in flagrant contravention of the Association’s constitution be suspended.

They also sought a declaration injunction that the forthcoming election be placed on hold pending the determination of the substantive suit amongst several other reliefs.

in view of the pending action in Court vide an originating summons issued to the defendants as made available to our correspondent, the aggrieved members believed that the electoral committee knowing fully well that there is a pending legal action at the Federal High Court on the modalities for conducting the election would suspend the conduct of the election till the determination of the outcome of the substantive suit.

The aggrieved members of the Alumni Association who swore to continually challenge the alleged illegality advised all the Alumni members of the Association to follow due process of the law and refrain from participating in any form of electoral exercise that could undermine the integrity of the judicial process.
