FUOYE:Group Calls For Merit In Appointment of New Registrar
The Organization in Defence of Truth and Social Justice in Nigeria has cried out over an alleged plan by management of the Federal University Oye Ekiti to manipulate the process for the appointment of a new registrar for the institution.
In a press statement signed by the secretary of the organization B. Ogunleye titled “FUOYE COUNCIL SET TO JETTISON FEDERAL CHARACTER AND MERIT IN THE APPOINTMENT OF A NEW REGISTRAR the organization called for the attention of President Muhammadu Buhari on the matter.
The statement reads “It has come to the knowledge of various Stakeholders, concerned public and staff of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti that the reconstituted Governing Council led by Dr. Muhammud Yahuza Lawan is being teleguided by the Prof. Kayode Soremekun led Management to jettison the Principles of Federal Character in the appointment of the next substantive Registrar of the University.
“This is because he has positioned an illegally recruited staff – Mr. Olatunbosun Odusanya who is from Ogun State but currently claiming Lagos State since they are kinsmen in order to shortchange the process. Moroever, the advertisement set for the appointment which is alien to the FUOYE Scheme of service and the Public Service Rules and Scheme of Service of neighbouring Universities smacks a grand conspiracy.
“For the scheme to be perfected to circumvent Principles of Federal Character enunciated by the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, several dimension has been introduced to the appointment saga which include rejection of applicants who did not have work experience in Federal Universities. No doubt, the advert noted its preference but did not bar applicants in Public Sector from applying since administration is similar in all tertiary institutions and there are cross fertilization of ideas encouraged in academic institutions. It is not only double standard to screen out applicants who are Deputy Registrars in Tertiary Institutions classified under National Policy of Education, but also undermines the principles of administration that recognizes transfer of service, secondment and appointments in the public service irrespective of their place of assignments.
“The current effort is therefore geared at ensuring that eminently qualified candidates including Registrars from state owned and federal institutions are barred from competing favourable in the exercise.
“It is necessary to call the attention of the President Commander in Chief, the Hon. Minister of Education, Head of Service of the Federation, ICPC, the National Assembly and Federal Character Commission to the latest development before it snowballs into injustice just as the Government has intervened in University of Lagos to ensure sanity and fairness.
“The Government must allow transparency and free hand where all applicants can favourably compete. The Government should ensure that the best candidates are picked so that we can sustain the goals of Federal Character Principles which states that the composition of the Government of the Federation or any of its agencies and the conduct of its affairs shall be carried out in such a manner as to reflect the federal character of Nigeria and the need to promote national unity, and also to command national loyalty, thereby ensuring that there shall be no predominance of persons from a few States or from a few ethnic or other sectional groups in that Government or in any of its agencies.
“This is a clarion call for equity and change mantra that APC Government under President Buhari has promised all Nigerians and indeed the peace loving people of Ekiti State. Let this press release circulate and let it reach Ekiti State Government, Leaders and the people in Abuja to take appropriate steps now.
Efforts is being made to get the reaction of management which would be published soon.
