The government of Ekiti State has been commended for tackling youth unemployment through the establishment of Bureau of Employment, Labour and Productivity.
This commendation was made in Ado Ekiti yesterday during a visit by the representatives of the Director General of National Directorate of Employment NDE, Dr Nasiru Mohammed.
The Governor who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Biodun Omoleye, appreciated the management of NDE for partnering the state government in supporting the youths in the State through series of programs and initiatives, geared toward making them productive and useful for themselves, the state and the nation at large.
While explaining the engagement process as entrenched in one of the pillars of his administration through participatory and good governance, Fayemi said the government takes issue of youths employment seriously
He said: “this government takes the issue of youth very seriously, if you look at the rank and files, most of the people in governance in Ekiti are youths. This is the engagement process in governance not withstanding we still have a lot of people outside.”
The Governor, assured that Ekiti state was prepared to cooperate with the directorate in mobilizing youth effort towards being gainfully employed.
“Young people are talented with energy, with vision, they need to be mentored. it is the gap that is there that you are providing, the mentoring and the leadership that you are providing and supporting we are happy and the government is grateful for your support.
“The initiative to take five thousand out of the streets as a pilot scheme is a wonderful one we are proud of you and we promise to make the best of it so that the pilot schemes will become a permanent one.”
He assured the management of the NDE that Ekiti would make the best use of of the programme, so that other states would come to Ekiti state to learn from it.
Earlier, Alhaji Lasisi Aliyu Ayodele who represented the Director General of NDE, Dr. Nasiru Mohammed, commended the efforts of the state government in tackling youth unemployment through the establishment of Bureau of Employment Labour and Productivity which he described as the first of it’s kind in the country
“I am actually here to inform his Excellency about the formal commencement of the special public works which would serve as pilot test in each state of which Ekiti would represent Southwest.
According to him, the pilot test would be carried out in 35 local governments across the federation, “they are the ones without much insecurity in which the success of the pilot test will determine whether the programme will be extended to all other local governments in the state.” He added
Five thousand beneficiary were targeted per participating states with a target of one thousand youths per local government.
He affirmed that the programme was actually targeted at the youth between the age of 18 and 30, “those people who can actually do the job not old people or school children because of the pilot test stage that we are, we want to only captured only those who are going to be willing to discharged the kind of task that’s going to be give to them because it involves some dirty jobs like clearing of gutters, traffic controls and cleaning of public infrastructures, hospitals and clinic.”
He stated that the participants will be mobilized to all the site by first of February.
