LG AUTONOMY: STAKEHOLDERS IN EKITI LAUD BUHARI FOR DIRECT PAYMENT OF ALLOCATION TO COUNCILS.

By Kayode Joseph.

Reactions have continued to trail the decision of the Federal Government to shoot allocation of local Governments directly into the councils account.

Before now, the allocation of local governments are paid into the account of states hence council chairmen are at the mercy of governors.

This development had retarded the councils from meeting up with their responsibilities particularly the role of providing social amenities to the grassroots.

A cross section of people who spoke with Roundoffnews urged Federal Government to backup the policywith laws so as to sustain it.

A political Scientist, Dr Gbenga Aladegbola emphasized the need for President Buhari to grant full autonomy to local governments saying that the step would engender more development at the grassroots.

The Chairman, Trade Union Congress Ekiti state chapter, Mr Sola Adigun maintained that the constitutional aspect that put local government system under the state must be reviewed.

His counterparts from the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Mr Olatunde Kolapo expressed the belief that local government administration would now have direct impact on people at the grassroots with a call on leaders not to abuse the process.

In his view, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Local government Employees NULGE in Ekiti state, Mr Bunmi Ajimoko commended President Buhari for the step.
